*TW for animal images at end of post
Even before I became fully aware of all the evils of the animals-for-food industry, even as a child, I would cringe every time I saw a commercial or kids’ book that used animal characters to sell meat. I mean, WTF. The implication is two-fold: that animals indeed have consciousness and cognition, wants and desires… And what they really desire is to be killed and put in our bellies.
That never sat well with me. But like many things, the thought never fully bloomed, until today when I came across this blog – Suicide Food.
The blog defines the issue like this:
What is Suicide Food? Suicide Food is any depiction of animals that act as though they wish to be consumed. Suicide Food actively participates in or celebrates its own demise. Suicide Food identifies with the oppressor. Suicide Food is a bellwether of our decadent society. Suicide Food says, “Hey! Come on! Eating meat is without any ethical ramifications! See, Mr. Greenjeans? The animals aren’t complaining! So what’s yourproblem?” Suicide Food is not funny
